Monuments and Memorials 2014 - 2022 Drawn by my persisting love of architecture, I began a photographic series of South African National Monuments. This extensive exhibition showcases my exploration of these striking structures. My initial attraction to Monuments as a subject was the challenge of exposing the forgotten beauty of subjects that are far too often taken for granted, or at the very least under appreciated. It wasn’t the history or the sentiment behind the structure but finding the forms hidden within which challenged me. I chose to de-contextualize the subjects from their various surroundings, allowing the essence of the concrete, the stone, the graphic lines, shapes and forms to leap from the visual chaos of the surrounding vegetation and city buildings. My intention is to encourage the viewer to respond to these powerful structures in a new way.
David has accumulated twenty years experience as an architecture, interiors , food and travel photographer working with leading South African Architects and Interior designers and published in dozens of local and international publications and books.
